& unlimited dogs!

Welcome to the & unlimited dogs photo blog!  I'm Meredith, a dog-loving photographer, from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where I live with my boyfriend, Michael and our totally insane lab, Orvis (who you will get to know quite well!).  The best part of my day is when I'm on the ground, rolling around and laughing with a dog!

Please check back often, as I will continue to update the site with each shoot.  Thank you for stopping by!

maine dog photographer: wolfe’s neck

Orvis and I cut out of work early last week to go hiking in Wolfe’s Neck State Park, one of our very favorite places in Maine.  I brought along my camera and snapped a few slobbery-filled pictures of my crazy black dog.

I’m not sure that it got over 30 degrees that day, but Orvis went for a full-out swim in the water.  Crazy dog!

I’m incredibly thankful for the life I have that allows me to ditch work and take my dog hiking in the middle of the day.

maine dog photographer: luna’s coffee table book!

Yesterday I decided to work from home because I really wanted to be there the minute the UPS truck came.  I would make up reasons to leave the office just so I could pass by our front door and casually take a peek at the front steps.  Seriously, this happened no less than fifteen times…  The brown box finally found its way to our doorstep and I literally tore it open with excitement and squealed with delight when I saw the book inside.

Luna’s coffee table book arrived yesterday and after snapping a few photos of it, I rushed downtown to the Old Port to share it with my dear friends, Darcy & Carolyn.  It was a surprise gift to both of them, to help them in celebrating Luna’s birthday tomorrow.  Both Darcy & Carolyn have been so incredibly supportive of me since I started my business, this book was just one small way to express my gratitude.

And, guess what?  They loved it!

A few of my favorite spreads from Luna’s Book.

February 5, 2010 - 3:38 pm april - It is always SO exciting when products arrive... it's seriously like xmas for me :) I'm sure they love the album!!

three years ago…

Our best friend in the world came into our lives three years ago, today.  He was 5 pounds at the time we brought him home and was scared of just about everything that moved.  We made the decision, on that sweet Sunday afternoon, to call him Orvis, after the fly-fishing company, and bought him a green collar.  He’s been wearing green everyday since…

A series of family pictures.  The night we brought Orvis home in February of 2007;  a hike in North Carolina in September of 2007;  and our backyard in Maine in 2009.

And… because I’m self conscious about posting mostly pictures from an old point and shoot, this is one of my favorite pictures of Orvis.

Thank you, Orvis, for giving us the best three years of our lives!

maine dog photographer: dances with dogs!

I meet people all the time who tell me that they are convinced that I have one of the best jobs in the world and I do not hesitate for one second to tell them that I completely agree- I love what I do.

This week I was able to meet with another small business owner who is also passionate about her work.  Julie Bernier truly loves what she does.  It’s always amazing for me to be able to capture that kind of love.

As the owner of Dances with Dogs, Maine’s only daycare for puppies and small-breed dogs, Julie spends her days working with the cutest dogs – helping to properly socialize them.  Calling on her background experience and Master’s degree in social work, Julie enforces appropriate learned behaviors in dogs of similar sizes through their interaction with one another.

And, most importantly, the dogs look up to and love their pack leader!

Julie has two of her own labs, Tonya & Casco.

Inviting me over to photograph cute puppies playing in the snow wasn’t enough for Julie!  She sent me home with the some of the best goodies- a dog leash holder and a tug toy that she makes and sells herself!  And, don’t you just love her logo for Dances with Dogs?  (Julie is quite the yogi too!)

I am convinced that if a puppy ever comes into our lives again, he or she will be definitely be applying for a spot at Dances with Dogs!  If only Orvis was 50 pounds lighter…

Thank you, Julie, for having me over!  I’m so excited for our future collaborative projects!

join the animal refuge league at flatbread tonight!

I think we all might be in agreement with Orvis that frozen pizza leaves much to be desired, especially when you compare it to the delicious pizza at Portland’s Flatbread Company!

Tonight is the night to head to Flatbread at 72 Commercial Street!  From 5pm-10pm this evening, Flatbread Company is generously donating $3.50 from every large pizza sold to the Animal Refuge League’s Cassandra Carson Emergency Fund!  Help spread the word and tell your family, friends and co-workers to come out to Flatbread tonight and support the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.

See you there!

January 19, 2010 - 8:57 am Samantha Warren - We'll be there, too! What a meaningful cause, and to support it by eating the best pizza in Portland- YES PLEASE!

maine dog photographer: kahoulin!

I drove up to Auburn last week to photograph the sweet lab-shepherd mix, Kahoulin.  It was my first dog session since November, so I was incredibly excited to get back in the swing of things.  When I wasn’t photographing Kahoulin, I was giving him lots of ear scratches and rubs, as he (all 75-ish pounds of him!) was sitting in my lap!  I had to remind myself that I wasn’t there to give Kahoulin lots of love… it was hard not to keep rubbing on him!

I absolutely love a black dog in the snow.

Kahoulin is about seven years old and has a great mix of spunk & playfulness with his calmer, cuddly side.

We headed inside, partly to let my fingers thaw, but also to get some shots of Kahoulin in his home environment.

Kahoulin has a delightfully sweet sister named, Ethel.  (How cute is her name?!)  She was actually the very first cat I’ve ever photographed and should probably deserve a prize some sort for that, right?

This series melts my heart!  I’ve never seen such affection between a dog and a cat.

Thank you, Victoria, for inviting me to your home in Auburn and letting me see what life with both a dog and a cat is like.  Photographically, it was a first for me!  I had a great time watching the three of you interact with each other and hope that one day you’ll find your way to my studio in South Portland.  (I’ll have to get some cat treats!)

dreaming of the snow

Orvis, my trusty office assistant, would much rather be out playing in the snow than sitting in the & [unlimited] studio and watching me work.  He lets me know about every three minutes when he lets out big, dramatic sighs.

I promise we’ll make it outside soon, Orvis.  Very soon!

harry & seymour!

Seymour, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon puppy, and his older brother Harry, the Welsh Terrier, came over to my backyard last weekend for their photo shoot!  It was a weekend of firsts for me- my first time working with both breeds & my first time photographing someone else’s dog in my own backyard.  What fun!

I loved what Seymour’s photographs looked like in black & white!  Seymour was such a fun-loving, spunky puppy!

Wirehaired_Pointing_Griffon_2

I’ve always wanted to photograph a Welsh Terrier and I was honored that Harry was my first!  He definitely has enough spunk in his personality to keep up with his playful younger brother.

Harry smiled a lot that morning.  How cute is this face?

We kept trying to get Seymour to point by saying “where’s the bird? Where’s the squirrel?” etc.

grace & lulu!

Last week I had the chance to photograph two of the cutest cousins, Grace & Lulu, at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth!

Grace_Chloe

Grace is a spunky Boston terrier who is, hands-down, the fastest dog I’ve ever seen.

Lulu, the baby Frenchie of the family, would be content with life if she could just chase Grace & eat treats!

Grace loved the leaves around Fort Williams that day!

After we left the park, we headed just down the street to the & unlimited studio so we could finish up with some studio shots!

jenny, kate & meg in cumberland!

I met Susan back in March when I photographed the Animal Refuge League’s first ever Paws in Stripes graduation ceremony.  As former Director of Operations at the ARL, Susan was very instrumental in the implementation of the fantastic program at the Maine Correctional Center.  Now, Susan works with the ASPCA on facilitating their fantastic Meet Your Match program.  Needless to say, she’s quite the animal lover!  I was so excited to reconnect with Susan this week for a surprise photo session for her husband’s upcoming birthday.  We met at the beautiful Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland and enjoyed some more of the season’s lovely leaves.

Meet Jenny, Meg & Kate!

Dogs_Cumberland_Maine

Jenny is a fun-loving Wheaten Terrier with a lot of spunk!  She’s always up for a game of fetch and will most definitely be interested in any treats you might have in your pocket!

Kate, has joined Susan’s family as a foster, but will hopefully become an official member of the family in the next few weeks.  A little camera shy at first, Kate gradually warmed up to the idea of posing for photographs in exchange for a few treats!

Maine_Standard_Poodle

Meg, the queen bee of the group, excitedly greeted everyone we came across at the park.  She has a great amount of energy for a thirteen year-old lab, but had no problem getting comfortable  on the ground in front of the beautiful leaves.

All three dogs love and adore Susan, even when she does not have treats in her hands!

Thank you, thank you, Susan! I hope Tom is surprised with the photos from this session.  The different dynamics of your three pups were hilarious to watch unfold at Twin Brooks.  I hope you will all stop by the studio the next time you’re in South Portland for some treats!
