Growing up in North Carolina, I was accustomed to seeing people swim in the ocean in March. By that time of the year the temperature of the air was at least 60 degrees. The water was chilly, no doubt, but definitely doable. I’m embarrassed to admit that since moving to Maine, I’ve only been in the Atlantic ocean one time! After years of splashing in and out of the water on the coast of North Carolina, participating in a variety of open water swims and attempting to surf summer after summer, I have all but hung up swimsuit . . . the water is just downright COLD!
Sunday was a dreary, soggy day. My car’s thermometer read a whopping 37 degrees as I road up Coastal Route 1 on my way to Reid State Park in Georgetown. Any other day in March (in Maine!) and 37 degrees would not have felt so cold, but that day I was photographing some pretty hardcore Mainers as they participated in the Coastal Humane Society’s Pupsicle Plunge. I practically shivered as I thought about them jumping in the water in this weather! Those brave souls took the frigid plunge in order to raise money for the Coastal Humane Society, by collecting pledges and donations for their honorable dedication to the organization and cause. Kudos to each and every one of them! While I can barely bring myself to enter the water in August, these courageous individuals jumped in the water . . . in Maine . . . in March! Wow.
